The market for some books will always be greater than the market for others. Although quality has a fair part to play, the main factor is simply the target market. In other words, just like almost every other business, publishing is all about supply and demand.
Supply: Once your book is created, you can sell as many electronic copies as you want - without having to spend any more time, effort or money in producing anything. Indeed the money just keeps coming in each time another sale is made. The knack is to make sure it keeps selling - which is our job. With electronic publishing, supply is fairly easy, once you know how.
In short, with your writing skills and our publishing skills, we have the "Supply" part of the equation handled. That leaves the other vital aspect - "Demand".
Demand: Although there is a market for almost every well written book, guide, mini-book and pamphlet out there, the inescapable fact is that some things sell very much better than others.
In some cases it can be something as subtle as a title change that turns a book selling 4 copies a month into one which sells around 60-70 copies per month. "Everything you need to know about Funeral Planning" may sell very poorly but "Arranging a simple funeral - step by step" may fair very much better - yet both books have identical content.
Simply because people may not want to know everything about a funeral - they want simple - and "step-by-step" helps them realise it should be broken down into manageable chunks - which they should be able to handle. Titles are crucial - which is why we always ask for the right to adjust titles according to the seller, country and market places we are targeting for you.
All that aside however, there are some basic topics which consistently out perform others, we will be adding to the list here as we find more topics which are in high demand. At the moment you will not be surprised perhaps to find that adult themed e-books ALWAYS sell well.
At the other end of the spectrum though, we were pleasantly saurprised to find a HUGE increase in demand for books aimed at both younger and older children. One of our new authors, Tessa McGinn has recently produced three superb books especially for children and all of them are expected to sell well.
As we have mentioned elsewhere on the site, "In the last three months of 2010, Amazon announced that in the United States, their e-book sales had surpassed sales of paperback books for the first time". There is no logical reason to assume this will ever change back in favour of the more traditional "paperback". This can only be good news for new authors.
Subjects that sell especially well
Children's Books - especially the fantasy / mystical adventure type. This category is now even outselling our adult titles.
Erotica - both gay, straight and fetish - extremely good demand for this when placed with the right vendors
Romance - there is a higher demand for straight romance - but also far more books. Gay romance has a smaller market - but FAR fewer rival publications.
If you click here, we can go into a little more detail about the type of Erotica and Romance that is most popular - but Please do not go there if adult material is likely to offend you. Frank words are used and we have no wish to cause distress to people, merely inform them.
Please Note - The subject above are simply the ones we have found selling best at present, we are interested in everything from poetry to horror, erotica to infoguides and fantasy to sci-fi. If the material is well written and appeals to a reasonably large market, we may well be interested.
